There is No Net

Individual leaping across gap in mountain range.

I see a person in the distance standing on the edge of a building along a sandy beach. He leaps. His body bounces lifelessly.

Next I see a flock of people standing on the edge of that same building. They begin to run and jump off the building, one after the other.

I wake up. . .sickened.

I was a by-stander. An observer. I didn’t intervene.

  • What was my role in this dream?

  • What prompted the others to leap off the side of a building together?

  • Were they influenced by the first person who leapt?

It made me think about the phrase, “leap and the net will appear." It's so easy to want to wait for the net to appear before we leap; before we take action. We want to make sure we are ready. . .that we're comfortable. . . .that we won’t fail.

But what if while I am busy waiting for the net, I miss the opportunity to influence others to make a different decision or to simply brighten their day? In what other ways am I a bystander in my life?

Three nights after the dream, I was watching a show when an ad came up. There was a group of people on top a mountain. One by one, they leapt off. Tumbling into thin air.

I thought, “Oh no. It’s happening again but in real life.” That sick feeling returned.

I looked again and realized, wait - they weren’t falling to their deaths.

They.

Had.

Wing.

Suits.

They flew away at lightning speeds.

They were not bystanders. They did not wait for the net to appear. Rather, they put on wing suits and leapt.

So I may not feel ready to start writing this blog; but someone out there may need to hear what I have to say.

We don’t get the luxury of feeling ready before we leap.

We don’t get to wait for the net to appear.

We’ve got to just put on our wing suits and fly.

Welcome to my leap! I'm glad you are here.
